Chemotherapy

The melanoma can develop metastasis in different organ systems that cannot be surgically removed. In this case only a medication therapy is possible to prevent the spreading of the tumour. A staged approach is available for this:

The treatment is started with a medication (DTIC or Temozolomid) that can cause for a part of the treated patients a cessation of the tumour growth or a regression of the tumour. The success of this treatment is checked with image creating examinations every 6-12 weeks. If the tumour continues to grow the treatment is changed and other medication (for example Paclitaxel, Carboplatin, etc.) that have different active principles are used.

Some of the medication treatments are conducted in clinical studies. New medication is being tested in clinical studies and based on pre-trial examinations is expected to be more effective compared to standard medication. This will result in additional therapy opportunities for patients. The treatment in clinical studies is especially carefully controlled and documented. A possible participation in clinical studies should be reviewed based on the individual situation of the illness for each patient.
