Sun protection
The most important method for the protection against UV-radiation is to avoid the sun in the hours with the highest intensity of radiation and to wear sun protective clothing. The protection through sun cream is also expedient, but sun creams with a sun protection factor of 30-50 (against sun burn) only offer a protection factor of 1,5 - 2 against non-melanoma cancer and no proven protection against the malignant melanoma. For this reason children should always be protected using clothing.
Method | Description | Value |
Sun Abstention | Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm (Europe) or 10am to 4pm (Subtropics, Tropics) | Effective method, reduces the UV-exposure by 80% |
Clothing | Non-see-through clothing offers effective protection. Important: hat, peaked cap | Effective sun protection, use special UV-clothing in the Subtropics |
Shade | 30-50% of the UV-rays are still present in the shade | Is overrated |
Sun cream | Protection factor 30-50 against sunburn offers a protection factor of 1,5-2 against non-melanoma cancer, but no proven protection against melanoma. | Is highly overrated |
